What To Look For When Buying Your First Paddle Board Maui

By Virginia Stevens

If you love the idea of getting out on the water as a fun and exciting form of exercise, you may be thinking about getting a paddle board. But which one? There are many different types and options on the market. Here are some things to consider that will help you pick the right paddle board Maui for your needs.

Most models look very similar. A stand up paddle board or SUP is long and wide. Some will have pointed fronts and narrower decks while others will be wider with fronts that are rounder. A user will stand or kneel on the deck. If they are carrying any gear, it will usually be strapped to the deck at one of various tie down points that are set into the surface. The top side often has a textured area where your feet sit and stabilizers underneath it.

One of the most important things to keep in mind when shopping is what you will want to do on the water. Do you want to be able to build up serious speed and participate in races? Do you dream of traveling longer distances and moving from campsite to campsite? If that is something you are interested in you might want to look at models that are designed for touring instead of racing.

One sport that is becoming popular is SUP yoga. This involves balancing on a SUP while performing various yoga poses. This can be a fun, relaxing way to enjoy some time on the water. If you know you want to use your board for this, make sure to look for a model that is wider and more stable while afloat.

Of course, not everyone has the room to store an eight foot or nine foot SUP. They may also not have a vehicle to get them to the sea. If you think this will be an issue you might want to look for an inflatable version as these can be much easier to carry and to store.

It can help you save money if you can buy your SUP and other gear as part of a package. Basic gear should include a personal flotation device, tether and paddle. Other gear could include storage and transportation racks and deck bags that keep your gear attached to your board so that it stays dry and secure while you are in the water. A package can help you save quite a bit of money in the long run.

One thing that can be helpful especially for a beginner is paddling lessons. You will learn basic strokes, how to get back up if you fall off, and other essential skills that will help you when you are out on your own.

Renting can be a great option as well, at least until you know how much you enjoy the sport. Look for places which have different versions that you can try so you know which you prefer. You may also want to make sure that they also offer safety equipment if you aren't quite ready to buy your own gear.
