Why SHTF Gear Is Absolutely Necessary

By Ruthie Livingston

When the shit really does hit the fan, you will know it. People who prepare for this eventuality say that this usually means a disaster such as a foreign invasion, a massive flood, power outage and, of course, zombies. Those people are called preppers and they have a lot of good ideas to consider. The first great idea is to plan for what you want to have as SHTF gear.

One of the things you will miss the most is your home. It may have been rendered unlivable for an entire host of reasons. You will need to find a suitable replacement fairly quickly. The largest numbers of true preppers have built their houses into compounds that can withstand the ravages of whatever is going on at the time. These will incorporate a lot of security measures and storage for everything.

The severity of something like this means you will not have the comfort of the home you have lived in and decorated just the way you wanted it. When you hear about bug out bags, you understand it is for living out of for about three days. The something that happens that sends you out of your house, this time, will take much longer to settle down.

The amount, type, size and configuration of your specific survival gear will depend, largely, on the number of people in your party. You do have to deal with a shelter and it should be on high ground. It will help immensely if it is secured against the weather and possible breaches.

You will be in the position of being self sufficient. This means power should be provided by a generator or, better still, nothing electric and heat provided by fireplace or pit. A few tools will ensure that all repairs needed can be accomplished.

You will not be able to trust public transportation if it is even running. The preppers you have talked to or heard about will have an old, non computer assisted vehicle such as a Land Rover or truck, possibly even a travel home. Repair manuals for whatever you have are critical. It does not help to have the largest vehicle in the now reduced neighborhood if it breaks down before you get back on track.

Security must not be left as an afterthought. Knives are appropriate and guns are often the first things preppers gather together. Ammunition should be stocked, now, before anything serious happens. Reloading gear is also something to think about. A pistol or rifle is absolutely no good for anything if there is no ammo.

Regardless of the type, amount and configuration of this gear, you need to safeguard it from others. When these problems, occur, everyone in impacted. Many of them will be after whatever they can find to enable themselves to survive, much like you will. The key to surviving is using what you have and not giving it away for any inadequate amount.
