Why A SHTF Bag Is So Very Vital For Your Family

By Ruthie Livingston

There are many things that can occur that will cause you to leave your home for a while. These would include things like floods, a fire coming from the closest forest or, if you believe some people and television shows, zombies. When these things happen, it is known as the shit hitting the fan. The best thing for you and your family is to have a SHTF bag ready to grab on the way out of the house.

Many people who promote these containers call them bug out bags. This is because, when you have to leave your home, you usually have very little time to accomplish this. You are actually bugging out and need stuff to survive for at least three days. This may be more than a simple bag and it must be large enough to contain material for your entire family, party or group.

Critical supplies must begin with water. During normal times of sedentary activity, one gallon of water a day per person is needed. You will be running and working to survive during this three day period, so more water will probably be needed. You cannot depend on rivers or streams providing this. If you do find one of these, a water purification tablet must be used to safeguard you from any impurities.

Your previous dependence on a daily shower will not be satisfied for a while during this time of danger and uncertainty. You may be able to find a location where a bath is possible. By locating this type of temporary service, you may find a place for better security and the water can be purified through several means available.

Food will be the next thing to think about and dehydrated products will be the lightest. You will have to concern yourself with weight as each person will need to carry their own bag. There are many types of dehydrated food items available and a lot of flavors can be mixed together. A simple tin can type of stove can be created if you remember to bring a can opener and small twigs should be enough to heat up any meal you are working on.

You will need provisions for staying dry and warm. A tent is appropriate as is a tarp for draping over a fence post or low hanging branch. Sleeping bags and or a blanket roll for each person will also assist in getting good sleep every night. You will be amazed at how much energy you will use, during the day when your attentions are on survival instead of mundane things like keeping the lawn mowed.

Other items very important for your survival will be sharp knives and a hand crank radio for the latest news and weather reports. All medications normally used should be packed as well as a lot of bandages. There should also be disinfectant spray or ointment and gauze bandages for larger cuts and abrasions. A gun or two can be suggested depending on skills and experience, in the group, and areas to be traversed to find shelter and return home.

Everything that is included in this type of container should assist you in something very specific. That specificity is expressed in the need to survive with water, food and warmth. Everything that does not help you in this special task should be left behind, except, maybe, a paperback book or two.
