A Look At Delray Beach Economy

By Jony Mozen

Few people consider the south of Florida as anything more than a perfect vacation area or somewhere to retire that is far away from the harsh conditions further north or west. Most cities in this part of the state have their fair share of retirees and vacationers but it is the people who live and work in them that are the heart beat any community. A look at the Delray Beach economy serves as a point in fact to this end.

In this community it has been shown that a household with two working adults has the capacity to earn well over sixty thousand dollars a year and there is plenty of full time work available for those who want to work. Unemployment levels are beneath the national and state averages according to the most recent census and there is a projected growth pattern of nearly forty percent in the next five years.

The growth in employment is being inspired by the long term renovations that are being done to the down town area and plans for more businesses on a secondary street that parallels Atlantic Street. The renovations have brought new diners, boutiques and business offices to the area. There has been an influx of attorneys and medical offices among the shops and restaurants. This enormous spurt of growth has created an area for residents to work, live and play within the urban core of the community.

Millions of dollars have been directed to the center part of the city and with the time controlled growth and redevelopment that is in place the city's economy continues to improve. Much of the employment opportunities available to people are focused in sales, office work and management fields and many service oriented opportunities are also frequently available.

In this town the largest place of employment is the medical center. They employ nearly fifteen hundred people in various positions. The other large companies have positions for three to five hundred people each and most could be classified as service oriented or sales positions. Target and Marriott's are two larger employers in the city.

Employers with smaller staff are usually involved with restaurants, retail shops and financial offices. These operations rarely have more than ten employees at any given time. Many of them are the newer companies that have evolved during the renovation period and are located in the city hub on Atlantic.

On the ocean side of the city are found multiple hotels that cater to vacationers on a full time basis. Many people find all of the adventure the ocean has to offer along the four mile stretch of sand and sea that borders the eastern shoreline. They find sailing and swimming activities that make this location worth many return trips. They are also able to visit the wild life refuge and the Everglades from the beaches here.

There are approximately sixty thousand permanent resident in this city and although it is still rather small it has a plan for growth and prosperity that has already shown itself to be successful. The business areas have grown and the recreational boundaries have expanded to the outskirts of adjoining communities. Those who are looking for a fresh start may want to consider this as their new home.
