How A National Airport Concierge Service Helps Unaccompanied Minors

By Lilia Slaybaugh

Kids have been traveling by plane by themselves for years. Each airline will have their own set of rules and regulations pertaining to children who travel unaccompanied by a parent or guardian. The United States Airport Concierge Services dictates the policies that airlines follow in regard to unaccompanied minor travelers.

In addition, the rules for when a child is able to travel alone vary by airline. For example, the US will not permit a child less than five years of age to travel without a parent or guardian. A child between the ages of 5 and 7 is permitted to travel alone provided they are taking a nonstop flight. However, they must be accompanied by the airline.

A child that is between 8 and 11 years of age can travel on connecting flights with an airline escort. It should be noted that a child of this age is not permitted to fly on a final connecting flight unless no other option exists. It may be surprising to learn that children 12 and over are permitted to travel unaccompanied without escort.

Some airlines offer escort services to kids twelve to seventeen if parents request it. Other airlines will not allow children to travel unaccompanied until they are age fifteen. Services are provided to those who want them for about one hundred dollars one way.

Parents are provided gate passes that let them go through security and take their child to the gate. Once parents reach the departure gate they hand their kids over to the attendance. The parents are permitted to stay until the plane is in flight to make sure everything is good.

If there is a connection to be made, the attendant keeps the child until the escort arrives. The child is taken to the connecting flight and turned over to an attendant. When children reach the final stop they are met by an adult who must show ID before the child is turned over.
