Great Vacation Locations To Stay In The Algarve.

By James Mason

The southern coast of Portugal is renowned for it's long stretch of beautiful beaches and what seems like an endless coastline. Hidden coves and an impressive three thousand hours of sunshine each year, tempt hundreds of thousands of visitors annually. With a vast array of hotels and resorts to choose from, visitors could be forgiven for declaring that they are "spoiled for choice." The following paragraphs give some further details for some great vacation locations to stay in the Algarve.

Albufeira is derived from the Arabic term Albuhera, which means "castle of the Sea." Some would argue, that this resort offers some of the best beaches in the region. Similarly, there are plenty of golf courses, restaurants and a bustling nightlife. The local people are very inviting and will give a warm welcome. The contrasting landscape varies between open marshland and pine forests, which can be enjoyed whilst sampling the local cuisine, in one of the many outdoor restaurants. International cuisine is readily available, however, the freshly caught local sardines, piri piri dishes and balcalhow (cod that is salted and dried) are definitely worth trying.

There are ample places to visit of historical and cultural interest, and visitors may find that they have too many choices. Such venues include the Museum of Archaeology, containing interesting artefact's documenting the city's history. Likewise, built in 1869 the Torre Sineira (bell tower) contains an impressive belfry with eight bells.

Vilamoura has contrasting scenery, with some areas covered by pine forests and others open marshlands. The large new marina invites dozens of cruise and sailing ships each week, and the harbor is dotted with restaurants and bars. Pretty white washed houses dominate the town, and there are plenty of sporting and leisure facilities to occupy any visitor.

Again there are a number of beaches and golf courses to choose from, and many cultural and historical places of interest. The pretty main church is situated in Quenenca and was built in the sixteenth century.

With something for everyone, there are many great vacation locations to stay in the Algarve. Wherever one chooses, plenty of sunshine is guaranteed.
